Featured Hardware: Lenel to release a hybrid video recorder

Lenel will announce the release of a new hybrid video recorder solution in the fourth quarter of 2007. Hybrid solutions are important to the video industry in that they bridge the gap between the traditional CCTV approach and the true end-to-end digital solution offered by IP video implementations.

When IP video technology first emerged, many market analysts predicted that analog sources would soon become antiquated. The reality of the situation is that analog sources still prevail for a variety of reasons, including cost, proven performance and durability. In addition, your site may already have existing analog cabling/sources. The hybrid solution will allow your site to maintain its existing analog installation while scaling the system up by adding IP sources as you’re ready. Furthermore, analysts now say that even when IP sources do overtake analog sources—a situation that is expected to occur by the end of the decade—analog camera sales won’t necessarily decline. By offering a hybrid solution, Lenel will provide an opportunity to future-proof the site.

The hybrid solution will employ the same basic principles as Lenel’s current video offering. The unit will be comprised of COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) products. Initially, the hybrid solution will be offered on what have been known as Lenel’s turnkey digital video recording solutions. New Lenel Digital Video Recorders purchased after the hybrid solution is announced will have the option of including IP channels at purchase time, or at a later date when the system is ready to expand.

As an added benefit , this development has allowed the LDVR solution to profit from many of the architectural improvements and feature enhancements that exist on the current LNVR platform. These updates will drive the choice of whether to use an analog solution versus an IP solution toward the edge, focusing on the ability of the analog or the IP source to solve the particular problem-set for the channel, rather than sacrificing to find something that fits for your entire site.

The hybrid recorder capitalizes on existing technologies to extend the power of your OnGuard security solution, helping to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your security installation.
